A scarlet Liquidambar leaf
M.S. Rooney
gleams on the path. Rain water
slides from its shine
as I take it in my hand.
Milkmaids sleep coiled
beneath west coast
lime green winter grasses
now pushing up
where I drop the leaf,
crimson on green.
How magnificent
we cannot control
rain, even now.
