The Moon is in Her Bear Era
Valerie Smith
What cold is coming that we have not known
when to bring in the plants and pets.
Grandmothers don’t forget what passes
through the marrow.
The sky roars like a lonely lion
crying to sleep and I try not to be
surprised by my breath.
Who do we think we are, watching her
rise and set night after night. Believe me,
I have lived here my whole life.
The bear in the sky wraps her coat tight,
lets loose a howl only her cubs can hear
