Rooms of the House
John Lennon
We dance under
soft stovetop lights
and the shadows of
long days spent
falling in love
with you, with a first home,
a first house to call our own together.
How many have done the same
set against these
cedar cabinets and
ceramic tilework?
Perhaps hardwood once
stretched from fireplace to French doors.
What stories were told between cracked plaster
walls before drywall replaced them?
And who enjoyed the warmth from these radiators
before we cozied near them, drinking
red wine as shelter on cold winter nights?
What kitchen conversations
and coffee table accords took place?
Did the creaking floorboards
and broken glass arguments
wake them too?
Music slows, time catches up,
the hallway light glows on,
and a thousand footsteps move
to the stories told
by the rooms of the house.
